| History
U-21 was built as a type IIB submarine in 1936. She was commissioned by Kptlt. Kurt Freiwald. The small boats of this type were in the beginning of the war the second biggest group in the Kriegsmarine. But their range and size basically allowed only operations in the North Sea or around England. Consequently, most of them would fall victim to the British defense or used as school and training boats.
She left Wilhelmshaven on 25 Aug 1939 for a war patrol of 12 days in sea. She returned 5 Sep 1939 to Wilhelmshaven.
No ships were sunk or damaged on this patrol.
U-21 left Wilhelmshaven on 9 Sep 1939 for a war patrol of 23 days in sea. She returned 1 Oct 1939 to Wilhelmshaven.
Despite the effort, U-21 remained successless also on this patrol.
U-21 left Wilhelmshaven on 2 Oct 1939 for transfer to Kiel.
U-21 left Kiel on 22 Oct 1939 for a war patrol of 18 days in sea. She returned 8 Nov 1939 to Kiel.
A total of 14,371 tons were sunk or damaged on this patrol.
U-21 left Kiel on 27 Nov 1939 for a war patrol of 9 days in sea. She returned 5 Dec 1939 to Kiel.
A total of 4,260 tons were sunk or damaged on this patrol.
She left Kiel on 17 Dec 1939 for a war patrol of 8 days in sea. She returned 24 Dec 1939 to Kiel.
A total of 2,827 tons were sunk or damaged on this patrol.
She left Kiel on 27 Jan 1940 for a war patrol of 14 days in sea. She returned 9 Feb 1940 to Wilhelmshaven.
1,353 tons were sunk or damaged on this patrol.
U-21 left Wilhelmshaven on 21 Mar 1940 for a war patrol of 7 days in sea. She returned 27 Mar 1940 to Mandal, Norway.

Stranded on 27 March, 1940 south-east of Mandal, in position 58.01N, 07.29E, after running aground off Oldknuppen Island following a navigational error. Interned in Norway at Kristiansand-Süd. Released to Germany on 9 April, 1940. Stricken 5 Aug, 1944 at Pillau. Scrapped in February, 1945.

The Riha disappearance
In 1969, Dr. Thomas Riha disappeared and in the subconsequent series of events, Gloria Tannenbaum was arrested for forgery and under suspicion of two other homicides. She plead not guilty by reason of insanity and got away with it. The case has now been added to our serial killer collection.
