U-302 was built as a type VIIC submarine in 1941. She was commissioned by Kptlt. Herbert Sickel. The Type VII boats were Germany's actual Atlantic boats. The type and especially the VIIC variant would become the work horse during the war. Of course, at the end, they were technically outdated, but also before most submarines sunk were VIIB and VIIC boats. She left Kiel on 26 Nov 1942 for transfer to Bergen. U-302 left Bergen on 2 Jan 1943 for a war patrol of 5 days in sea. She returned 6 Jan 1943 to Narvik. No ships were sunk or damaged on this patrol. U-302 left Narvik on 10 Jan 1943 for a war patrol of 20 days in sea. She returned 29 Jan 1943 to Kaafjord. Despite the effort, U-302 remained successless also on this patrol. She left Kaafjord on 2 Feb 1943 for a war patrol of 20 days in sea. She returned 21 Feb 1943 to Narvik. Despite the effort, U-302 remained successless also on this patrol. She left Narvik on 14 Mar 1943 for a war patrol of 2 days in sea. She returned 15 Mar 1943 to Narvik. U-302 was once more without luck on this patrol. no ship were damaged or sunk. U-302 left Narvik on 17 Mar 1943 for a war patrol of 32 days in sea. She returned 17 Apr 1943 to Narvik. Despite the effort, U-302 remained successless also on this patrol. U-302 left Narvik on 18 Apr 1943 for transfer to Trondheim. U-302 left Trondheim on 29 May 1943 for transfer to Hammerfest. She left Hammerfest on 9 Jun 1943 for a war patrol of 41 days in sea. She returned 19 Jul 1943 to Narvik. Despite the effort, U-302 remained successless also on this patrol. U-302 left Narvik on 25 Jul 1943 for transfer to Skjomenfjord. U-302 left Skjomenfjord on 30 Jul 1943 for a war patrol of 55 days in sea. She returned 22 Sep 1943 to Skjomenfjord. A total of 2,920 tons were sunk or damaged on this patrol. U-302 left Skjomenfjord on 23 Sep 1943 for transfer to Trondheim. U-302 left Trondheim on 6 Dec 1943 for a war patrol of 56 days in sea. She returned 30 Jan 1944 to La Pallice. No ships were sunk or damaged on this patrol. She left La Pallice on 11 Mar 1944 for what should become her last war patrol. No radio traffic was received from U-302 after 6 Apr 1944. A total of 9,777 tons were sunk or damaged on this patrol.
