| History
U-81 was built as a type VIIC submarine in 1940. She was commissioned by Kptlt. Friedrich Guggenberger. The Type VII boats were Germany's actual Atlantic boats. The type and especially the VIIC variant would become the work horse during the war. Of course, at the end, they were technically outdated, but also before most submarines sunk were VIIB and VIIC boats.
She left Kiel on 21 Jun 1941 for transfer to Trondheim.
U-81 left Trondheim on 17 Jul 1941 for a war patrol of 22 days in sea. She returned 7 Aug 1941 to Kirkenes.
No ships were sunk or damaged on this patrol.
She left Kirkenes on 9 Aug 1941 for transfer to Trondheim.
She left Trondheim on 27 Aug 1941 for a war patrol of 24 days in sea. She returned 19 Sep 1941 to Brest.

The Riha disappearance
In 1969, Dr. Thomas Riha disappeared and in the subconsequent series of events, Gloria Tannenbaum was arrested for forgery and under suspicion of two other homicides. She plead not guilty by reason of insanity and got away with it. The case has now been added to our serial killer collection.
