| | | With Ptolemy I Soter started the Ptolemaean Period, sometimes also called the 32nd dynasty.
Ptolemy's self-crowning was some kind of desperate maneuver since, after the death of Alexander the Great, every general tried to cut out his piece of the cake. But Ptolemy was one of the better ones. In fact, he created a quite powerful country streatching from southern Syria to Cyrene and in the south till Nubia. Alexandria became the new capital and a center of Greek culture, but to gain recognization by the native population, Ptolemy and his successors named themselves successors of the pharaohs and took names lika ancient pharaohs. Later, they took over the attitude to marry their sistes as the old pharaohs had done, let themselves being portrayed in the same style and also participated in the religious life. They Egyptizized themselves, but in the end, they always remained to a part Greeks. In thier wake, Greek culture would thrive in Egypt over the times of the Roman occupation and till the Muslim conquest. But the Ptolemaeans had to fight native rebellions, enemies fromt he outside and occasional civil wars while fighting other members of their own family.
Over the years, Egypt had to lean always more on the support of Rome to fend of enemies, starting with the Seleukides. When Ceasar came to Egypt, Cleopatra was pharaoh, but so was also her brother and husband Ptolemy XIII.
The story is well known and made into more or less entertaining movies: Caesar became her lover and defeated Ptolemy for her. But in the process, Ceasar draw the ire of the senate and thus was killed. In the following time, she allied with Marcus Antonius, but he also draw the ire if Octavian and the senate. After the lost battles at sea and one year later on land, Antnius killed themselves and Cleopatra, seeing that Ocatvian wasn't interested in any form of negotiation, did the same. With her death, the Ptolemaean line ended and further on, Egypt became just one Roman province more. | | ... back |

The Riha disappearance
In 1969, Dr. Thomas Riha disappeared and in the subconsequent series of events, Gloria Tannenbaum was arrested for forgery and under suspicion of two other homicides. She plead not guilty by reason of insanity and got away with it. The case has now been added to our serial killer collection.
