Pharaohs: Ahmose I Amenhotep I Tutmose I Tutmose II Hatshepsut Tutmose III Amenhotep II Tutmose IV Amenhotep Ankhenaten Neferneferuaten Smenkhare Tutankhamun Ay Horemheb
| | The first pharaoh of the 18th dynasty was Ahmose I, the brother of Tao, the king before last in the 17th dynasty and he took over after Kamose, the last king of the 17th dynasty died without hair.
What followed is probably the best known of all Egyptian dynasties. Not only the number of monuments and building is beyond impressive, also it's share at the most famous paharaohs is overwhelming. From Tutankhamon, who was basically a boy king, but became famous when his tomb was discovered unrobbed to Amenhotep I, II and III, the Tutmosides, the heretic king Ankhenaton and of course Horemheb, who with some right is often compared to Nero, this dynasty is a collection of the famous, which dwarfs even the following 19th dynasty in glory. And given the pharaohs there, that means a thing or two!
Aside of that, the 18th dynasty ruled for an extreme long time. About 258 years! They had time to chisel their names in the history books.
It starts with Ahmose I, who basically started out as the last king of the Second Intermediate, but became the first pharaoh of the New Kingdom after he defeated the remaining Hyksos and conquered their capitla Avaris. For the first time, Egypt was re-united ... again.
But Ahmose died without heir and so the next pharaoh was legitimated by marriage. Tutmosis I is often compared to the Egyptian Napoleon and indeed, under his reign, Egypt reached it's maximum expanse. His daughter, Hatschpsut reigned for over twenty years. The most notable aspect of her rulership is not that she was a women, we had that often enough. But with sending out trade expeditions to countries lost from memory of Egypt during two intermediates, the import of foreing plants and sheer political genius, she earned her place in the histpory books. Which was for a long time denied to her by her own son Tutmosis III. A not so nice guy, but Egypts greates military leader ever, successfully establishing Egypt as superpower of it'S days.
Noteworthy is also Amenhotep III, who started a building program that can only be compared to that of Ramses II in the 19th dynasty. Only Ramses had about double the time.
But the 18th dynasty is also connected to Ankhenaten, the heretic king, who, in his attempt to establish a new monotheistic religion, ruined the economy and therefore the nations power. And no, I will not discuss his wife Nofretiti, who was described as one of the most beautiful women in history. I have seen her statue and I was so NOT impressed. When Ankhenaten died, he left a nation in chaos and broke. The best, one can say about his time is probably, that some of his ideas sounded pretty modern in thier definition of progress and liberty.
And of course, there was Tutankamun. He was a little boy when he became king and a big boy when he died. If his tomb would have been robbes as everybody else's. he wouldn't been worth a footnote. So, we can call him kind of a lucky boy ... or maybe not, considering, he fell probably victim to a homicide.
Ay and Horemhab, the last two kings of the 18th dynasty weren't really members of the dynasty, but attempted to leave that impression for the sake of their own legitimation. With Horemhab, who was a great general but also known as impotent, the 18th dynasty ends for obvious reasons. | ... back |
