Osama bin Laden is dead - what now?
May 3rd, 2011, Kansas City - Sometimes it helps to be just lucky
Osama bin Laden, the most wanted terrorist in the World, has been shot in Pakistan in a multi-million dollar hideout!
Now, that's basically pretty good news. The man was responsible for thousands of murders, not only, but inclusive, nearly three-thousand innocent people at 9/11. So, my pity with him is strictly limited.
But while happiness and political hype rule the subject, I can't help, but thinking about the realities. A courier took a phone, and this phone call was overheard. That trace led the CIA in the end to Osama's hideout. The phone call happened in 2010. In other words, Obama, who now takes all the credit, was just lucky that it happened in his time.
However, one has to credit Obama with making the right decision. He sent the SEALs and didn't use a Predator drone or, God forbid, a cruise missile as one of his less bright predecessors in office. Obama did, what every good President in this situation would have done. For that, one has to give him credit. And again, however, lets think this to the end. Obama wanted to run from Afghanistan already last year. Reality held him back. But what if it hadn't? Simple answer: The SEALs wouldn't have had a base to start from. The CIA would have had less presence in Pakistan for the same reason, Nobody would have noticed the phone call, nobody would have found Osama and even if, he would have been out of reach.
But Obama couldn't pull out, in fact, he still hasn't managed a complete pull-out of Iraq and already started a new endless campaign in Libya.
Osama bin Laden

But despite Obama's deepest wishes, the US are still present in Afghanistan and that is what allowed us to get Osama bin Laden. Now, the President claims the reward for "his" success - the re-election for the next four years in the White House. And honestly, his chances to get this reward increased when the first bullet hit Osama's forehead. Not because Obama fired that bullet, not that. But simply because sometimes, in war, it helps to be just lucky. Obama was lucky. And Obama made the right decision, a decision, every good President would have made. But at least, also that criteria sets him appart from Clinton or Carter, one who fed bin Laden and messed things up with using a cruise missile when boots on the ground were in demand and the other one,
who basically bred the monster during the Afghan war by supporting everyone who was willing to support who shot on the Russians without asking who those people were. In fact, another treat, that sets Obama appart from Carter.
But in the end of the day, the SEALs of Team 6 did the job. They deserve the glory to have done it.
All of that leaves us with a question: What now? We all can figure, the war is not over. It will get wild for another round. Somewhere, at this moment, I would bet, sits a bunch of Islamists and plans revenge. We still have to be vigilant. And as long as those nutjobs are out there, there will be no peace. All illusions about integrating the Taliban, and by that their Al-Queda friends, in the political landscape of Afghanistan are as delusional as the idea to make peace with the Palestinians while the Hamas ist still in control. Terror organizations are terror organizations - not political parties. You don't hire a wolf to protect sheep.
So, what have changed then? In fact, one thing has: We are not afraid anymore, we are in the offensive. Not on a technical level, not that. But on a mental level. Now we are suddenly willing to win - and if that means to kill some guys who killed thousands, so be it. To me, I admit it, it sounds reasonable. Because it means, we are not afraid anymore to win! And that is, what the "what now" is all about.
